Caribou Renaissance, is a video poem and prayer for the endangered caribou herds in the Revelstoke and surrounding mountainous areas, part of the Secwépemc territory as well as Ktunaxa, Syilx and Sinixt. Caribou were harvested and used by Secwépemc people, cultural belongings in museum collections include items made from caribou and Secwepemcstín language includes specialized terms for caribou. The extirpated and endangered caribou are linked to the climate catastrophe wrought by early and ongoing colonial extraction. While Revelstoke prides itself on its’ magnificent wilderness this is countered by the severe impacts on some species and habitats that continue to be threatened by extinction. This video is; a call, a poem, a prayer, a lament and a gratitude for the work being done and the work needed to preserve the herds and rebirth the Caribou Nation.
